Important Facts about Socrates:

  • Socrates lived in Athens, Greece around 2,400 years ago. 
  • He never wrote any of his ideas. He taught people how to think. The facts we know about him have come from other people who wrote about him.
  • Socrates’ student, Plato wrote a lot about him.
  • Socrates was known for his special way of teaching. Instead of telling people what to think, he used to ask them a lot of difficult questions.
  • Many of his contemporaries did not like him since they believed that he was corrupting young minds by encouraging them to ask questions on traditional rules and beliefs.
  • In 399 BC, Socrates was accused of two things- corrupting young minds and not believing in the city’s gods.
